Adding Colourful Greens to Your Dog's Diet

Nutritious Greens Your Dog Will Love

We are loving greens for dogs, and we don't just mean our collection of green accessories ;)

When so many of the options for pet food look and appear to be the same - i.e. brown crunchy kibbles with leaping dogs displaying health and vitality on the packaging - it's easy to overlook the benefits of adding a little more colour to your pup's diet. Just as greens are essential for our health, they can also be an excellent  addition to your dog's diet.

Welcome to a world where leafy greens and veggies aren't just reserved for humans; they're a nutritious treat for our canine companions too! From boosting their immune system to supporting digestive health, let's discover some super "green" foods that can contribute to a happier, healthier life for your beloved pet.

Before we start though, a little disclaimer:

Every pup is different and has different needs. Please always take this into consideration before introducing anything new to their diet! Too much of a good thing can sometimes have adverse affects so be sure to double check food and treat quantities that are right for your pup's size, weight, etc. When in doubt, ask your vet for personalized advice!

Good Greens for Your Pup

Broccoli

Cooked or raw, it's a tasty treat for your pup. It's a superfood with cancer fighting properties. It's an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fibre that you can add to your pup's diet. There's so much goodness packed into broccoli that we'll have to tackle it as a subject all on its own.

Brussels Sprouts

Good for you and your pup! Like broccoli these little baby greens are packed with vitamins and minerals that can help support a healthy lifestyle. They also contain a lot of water so for any of our little chunky friends, Brussels sprouts are an excellent low calories, high reward treat!

Cabbage

Not every pup is going to like cabbage but it's another healthy option for the weight conscious pup! It's full of vitamin C and an excellent source of magnesium. It's a nutrient dense veggie that makes for a great topper!

Mint

Now here's a little green leaf that is definitely meant to be consumed in moderation. A small amount can go a long way in helping to improve your dog's breath but too much of this good thing can cause some upset stomachs. Add mint as an ingredient to a batch of treats, for example, is an easy way to include it in your pup's diet.

Chlorophyll

This is a green pigment found in most green coloured plants and algae. It's an excellent supplement that can help boost your pup's immune system, reduce inflammation, aid digestion and more. It's a superfood supplement!

Spirulina

Another super supplement, spirulina is a highly nutritious microalgae that is packed with chlorophyll, antioxidants and essential fatty acid GLA. It can help with digestion, managing allergies and more!

Green Apples

A tasty treat your pup will definitely enjoy! Green apples are lower in sugar than other types of apples and contain a little more vitamin A.

Pears

Another tasty fruit, pears are high in copper, vitamins C and K, and fibre. They make a nice treat for your fur baby - just be sure to avoid giving them the seeds or core.

Celery

Crunchy and full of hydration, celery is full of nutrients and vitamins that support a healthy heart like vitamins A,B and C!

Cucumber

Filled with Vitamin K and potassium, cucumbers are also low in carbs, fats and oils. It's an excellent and hydrating snack for pups that love their treats but need to maintain a healthy weight (a personal favourite at Barkin' HQ).

Green Beans

Hello to an excellent source of fibre and a great source of vitamins, minerals and protein! Green beans are another great option if you are wanting to boost your pup's diet but maintain a healthy weight.

There are so many healthy and tasty ways to add green into your dog's diet. Even if your pup mainly eats kibble, adding these types of greens as fun toppers is a great way to make their food more interesting and more nutritious.

Now that we've added green to their food bowls, why not add some green to their accessories? We've curated a collection of green Barkin' accessories!
