5 Fun and Easy Indoor Rainy Day Activities for Your Pup

The wet weather as definitely arrived!

Here are some tips to help keep your pup busy indoors!

The other day, I took Mister Boeing out for a walk and of course, I unwittingly chose the time of day when we had such a massive downpour of rain. The wind was gusting, sheets and sheets of big fat drops pummelled us and within 20 seconds (no exaggeration), we were soaked and running for shelter under a neighbour's carport!

We stood for a minute as I decided: do we wait this out or try again? Mister Boeing needed to do his business but even he didn't seem thrilled at the prospect of going back out there. I decided to try again but Boeing had enough: he ran/pulled me all the way home. Rainy day adventure over.

I'm lucky that Boeing is a good boy and doesn't chew on household things and plants when we gets less exercise than usual. However I realize not every pet parent has this experience. Rainy days like this one especially call for a little more creativity at home for all pups, but especially for the pups with a lot of energy!
Here are our tips and ideas to help your pup avoid boredom (which can easily lead to more destructive habits) and actually get tired out without having to run in a major downpour!

1. Nosework

Sniffing is an excellent activity for mental stimulation! It also increases their respiration rate so it actually can be a tiring activity. Try using accessories like snuffle mats, play "Find It" games or "Which Hand" games.

2. Tug Time

A game of tug is never a bad idea! It's a great way to get that energy out and bond with your pup.

3. New Tricks

Just like humans, learning something new can take a lot of energy. Try teaching your pup new commands and tricks, no matter how old he is. Learning new things is excellent mental stimulation and usually comes with lots of treats!

4. Puzzle Toys

This activity is just awesome on so many levels! Nosework, mental stimulation and physical dexterity to get to those treats! Depending on what puzzle you have or create, your pup will be entertained, engaged and getting smarter with each pass!

5. Indoor "Run Around" Games

If you have the space, play indoor fetch! Actually, even if you don't have a ton of space, you can still play. The game of fetch is not limited to long far throws! If you are in an apartment (and can do this without getting into trouble) try a game of hallway fetch! Another idea is to create an indoor agility game by creating obstacles with things you can find around the house, such as pillows!

Now add cuddles, naps, and good old fashioned belly rubs into the mix and your fur baby is going to be a very happy pup, even if the weather outside is miserable.

Stay tuned for more fun ideas for indoor fun with your pup(s)!
